Portal Vein Embolization (PVE) is a medical procedure performed prior to liver surgery, especially when a significant portion of the liver needs to be removed (partial hepatectomy). PVE involves the deliberate occlusion or embolization of a portal vein branch that supplies the portion of the liver scheduled for removal. This diversion of blood flow encourages the growth of the remaining liver tissue, enhancing its functional capacity and reducing the risk of postoperative liver failure. PVE helps patients with limited liver reserves prepare for major liver surgeries and improves the safety and success of such procedures.
