Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage (PTBD)
Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage (PTBD) is a medical procedure used to treat bile duct obstructions or blockages. During PTBD, a thin catheter is inserted through the skin and into the liver to access the blocked bile ducts. Contrast dye is injected, allowing visualization of the obstruction via X-ray. Once located, the blockage is bypassed by placing a drainage tube or stent, allowing bile to flow freely into the small intestine or an external bag. PTBD helps relieve symptoms such as jaundice, itching, and discomfort caused by the obstruction and can be used as a temporary or palliative measure while addressing the underlying issue.
